I would like to share some of my reflections about our time together at the International Academy High School in Michigan. Gracing the hallways of our school was a mural depicting major landmarks from various countries of the world. This outstanding addition to our corridors illustrated Amy's dedication and artistic vision. I had the pleasure of working with Amy for four years as her Visual Arts teacher at the IA, a Michigan public school featuring the International Baccalaureate at the center of the curriculum. I will always treasure my time with Amy, who was a talented and high-achieving member of the class of 2005.
When Amy first entered my Art 1 class as a 9th grade student, she had already exhibited her artwork at the local Troy Library and held the distinction of being the youngest artist to have a solo show there. I suggested that Amy incorporate a degree of difficulty in each assignment, an approach that she continued to practice throughout high school. As a talented artist, she received numerous awards in community and school competitions. For her final senior portfolio, she concentrated on the influence of her Asian background in painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking and received top scores. Moreover, Amy was a person who applied what she learned beyond the classroom. She helped found the Asian Students Association and illustrated a calendar for the Michigan Humane Society and a local children's author.
Amy spent hours in the art room and became a treasured student that is rare in ones teaching career. I followed her educational path and career choices after high school and was thrilled to see her using her many talents! I referred to her combination of business and art when presenting the successes of IA Visual Arts alumni. Her artistic legacy and personal qualities will live on. Despite my deep sadness at her passing, I celebrate my time with her and the great impact she has made during her life!
